Pasadena has the oldest and most architecturally specific housing stock we work in. Craftsman bungalows in Bungalow Heaven with deep eaves, exposed rafter tails and low-pitched gables; Spanish Colonial Revival homes with clay tile and parapet details; English Tudor and Colonial Revival houses in Madison Heights; mid-century homes in the Linda Vista and San Rafael hills; and post-war ranch stock in Hastings Ranch. Each of those takes a different roof, and on the older ones the roof is part of the architecture rather than a surface on top of it.
That matters practically. Deep Craftsman eaves and exposed rafter tails are prone to dry rot and are visible from the street, so the repair has to be carpentry-grade, not roofing-grade. Original clay tile on a Spanish home is worth keeping and relaying rather than replacing with a modern lookalike.
